Senior Living in Kansas City: Summer Activities Our Residents Enjoy

Kansas City is a wonderful place to live during the warm summer months, and our residents definitely agree! There are so many beautiful places to go and sights to see both on and off the St. Anthony’s campus. We are thrilled to welcome back the fun summer days while encouraging our residents not to get outside and be active while the weather permits. Let’s explore the many fun summer activities our St. Anthony’s residents enjoy.

Why We Love Summer in Kansas City

Kansas City is blessed with four beautiful seasons, summer included! Hot sunny days soften into relaxing nights and the sun rarely hides behind clouds or rain. People of all ages enjoy taking in the fresh air and the city truly comes alive with activity and excitement. And our location in the heart of Brookside allows our residents to enjoy the many Kansas City summer traditions.

Summer Events for Kansas City Seniors

Kansas City is full of events and summertime activities for all lifestyles and interests. From dining al fresco to festivals and art shows, there’s always something fun to experience in Kansas City during summertime! Whether you are currently enjoying senior living, considering it, or have a loved one at St. Anthony’s, these local events are a great way to stay connected with the Kansas City community.

Here are some favorite things St. Anthony’s residents love to experience and explore:

1. The Farmer’s Market

Grocery shopping is much more fun in the summer once the Brookside Farmer’s Market opens! Not only is it an excuse to get outside, but it gives seniors a fun way to stock their kitchens with fresh produce and delicious locally-made treats!

2. Celebration at the Station

Everyone in Kansas City knows about this huge summer kick-off event. Packed with live performances, good food, and fun activities, Celebration at the Station is an all-ages favorite way to welcome summertime on Memorial Day weekend!

3. Heart of America Shakespeare Festival

For seniors looking to expand their horizons (or interested in reliving their more theatrical days),  the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival offers outdoor performances of all the best Shakespearean plays. The big show this summer is The Tempest!

4. Ethnic Enrichment Fest

It’s never too late (or too early!) to explore other cultures. The Kansas City Ethnic Enrichment Fest is all about diving deeper into cultures and traditions from around the globe. At the Ethnic Enrichment Fest, the Kansas City community can explore our uniquely multicultural city’s history, traditions, and food. For seniors who love sharing and hearing stories, this festival is a wonderful place to start.

5. Beautiful Kansas City Gardens

Kansas City has some of the most lovely gardens to stroll through (in our opinion at least). One popular choice is the Ewing Kauffman Memorial Garden, which has ever-changing plant displays to keep things fresh all year round. We also enjoy taking our residents on outings to the Loose Park Rose Garden to see the stunning flowers in bloom. And here’s the good news: both gardens are free to the public!

What St. Anthony’s Residents Do for Fun in the Sun

As exciting as it can be to explore Kansas City in the summertime, there truly is no place like home for our St. Anthony’s residents — and by home, we don’t mean their spacious apartments! We’re talking about the St. Anthony’s campus and community that livens up just as much as the surrounding city when the sun comes out. Here’s what we like to do outside when the weather is welcoming:

1. Stroll Through the Visitation Gardens

When residents prefer to stick closer to home, our perfectly cultivated Visitation Gardens offer a relaxing place to stroll with family and friends and get some much-needed vitamin D. Landscaping maintenance is included in the rent, so our residents can let go of worrying about their garden and simply enjoy ours. Of course, some residents still like to get their hands dirty, which is why we have options for that too!

2. Outdoor Hobbies and Clubs

Just because you aren’t tending to your own gardens at home anymore doesn’t mean you have to give up on your hobby when you move into St. Anthony’s. Many of our independent living and assisted living residents are big fans of the Gardening Club! It’s such a fun way to spend time outside, allowing them to enjoy what they love while staying active.

Of course, not all activities have to be outdoor-specific in order to enjoy them outside! Some of our residents love to move their games or clubs outside on nice days, or just pick up a book from the library and relax in the sun for some quiet time.

3. Special Events and Celebrations

The residents aren’t the only ones who intentionally take advantage of Kansas City senior living on sunny days — our staff does too! For any summer events we plan, from holidays to birthday celebrations and everything in between, we try to find a way to set up at least a piece of the party outside. For example, on Memorial Day we will be having a barbeque picnic outside with live entertainment!
